Thanks to Esther Knight for gifting me a copy of this.

This was a excellent follow up to the last book. Rebecca has settled in Toledo, doing her healing, living with Tirza and Merav and trying to put the events of the last book from her mind such as the trial with her aunt Yocheved but when her cousin Yaacov asks for her help when he suspects sabotage at the DeToledo vellum workshop, Rebecca elects not to help feeling still a bit bitter but a death will soon have her looking into it. Sir John helps her even though his boss Edgar feels it's not worth their time, Edgar tasks him with looking into a supposed ghost haunting his widow who Edgar makes note is quite attractive. The Master of Spies appears and tasked Rebecca with getting close to Nathan a wealthy merchant to see if he has ties with Almohads, Muslims who controlled much of the Maghreb and Iberian Peninsula in Rebecca's time and were quite militant in their views and not great to Jews and Christians, Master of Spies makes it clear she has to do anything even maybe marrying Nathan to get the info for the Queen. Rebecca who values her independence is not keen on it but also she no idea in how to court or has ever kissed having really just been focused on her calling as a healer, also there is the tension between her and Sir John which is already causing some whispers. The investigation into the death and sabotage soon leads to another death that hits closer to home and is sad in how it effects a chance of reconciliation in the DeToledo family. This was so great and why giving you a taste of the past but feels modern as well, there is a moment between Rebecca and Sir John that is funny yet cute that's comes not long after she has her first kiss and isn't a fan but what happeneds with Sir John confirms something to Rebecca. Soon enough the culprit in the murders is found not long after an attempt on Rebecca's life, Sir John's ghost case is also solved even if he got injured in the process. This was just so good with the right mix of mystery, slow burn romance. I look forward to the next on
