Thanks to Netgallery for giving me these YA Mystery/Thriller eARCs.
The first two are a series of books based around the adventures of Piper Sail a young woman in the 1920s who gets involved in solving crimes. The first book deals with her trying to find her missing friend which leads her into the seedy side of Chicago. The second she is asked by a student of her former school to look into her brother's death. The first book came out in 2017 but has been reissued and the second is a companion the release date being the 5th of August for both on Netgallery though the paperback for the lost girl on Amazon says 11th of September but the audiobook is the 5th of August. I found both to be very enjoyable and it gave off Veronica Mars vibes if she had been in the 1920s. Five ⭐
My further thoughts on the Piper Sail books, I found interesting how the author dealt with epilepsy which Piper's friend Lydia has which makes finding her of the upmost importance, we see how this illness is not as well known or learned to dealt with in the 20s as it is today l. Also the author makes the Chicago of the past feel real and shows how as a young woman there was a certain expectation for how to act and what to do with their life. Over the two books we see Piper grown as a person and try to figure her own life path. I hope for more from this character.
Oxford Blood by Rachel Davis Featherstone centres around Eva a mixed race girl as she goes through interview week at Oxford hoping to get into Beecham to study English Lit. She wants to fulfill her late mother's dream but also wishes to go with her friend George but a cruel thing happens with George seemingly dying while trying to do a dare but Eva a daughter of a cop doesn't believe this and is soon trying to find out the truth. This was a very interesting and compelling story which was filled with twists also they is a issue involving the statue of a slave owing alumni also bringing up class, race , sexism/SA. Five ⭐. Further thoughts this was such a thrilling read and reading how Eva dealt with her lost but also dealing with judgement on her mixed race, class status and people not taking her seriously when she said it was murder. I rooted for her as she searched for the truth.
